Tire pressure naturally decreases over time — about 1-2 PSI per month. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, which means your engine works harder and burns more fuel. They also wear unevenly, reducing tire life significantly.
How to check: Use a quality tire pressure gauge (digital gauges are most accurate). Check pressure when tires are cold — before driving or at least 3 hours after. The recommended PSI is on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, NOT on the tire sidewall (that number is the maximum pressure).
Pro tip: Check your spare tire too! There's nothing worse than a flat tire and a flat spare. Most spare tires should be inflated to 60 PSI.
